We have lived in our house for the last three and a half years -Raeca has been here her entire life and yet in the last six months she has developed a great fear of the train that comes by. And, unfortunately, it comes by often. If she is alone when she hears the whistle (or hears the rumbling down the track, still miles away), she will come screaming to me, day or night. There was one night we had four trains come by in two hours, it was a rough one.
I think her attitude lately has been in direct correlation to the lack of sleep she has been getting as a result of her fear of the train. All evidence points that way -the last two nights she slept through the night with no interruptions and I’ve had my happy, loving little girl back. Gone is the girl that was throwing a tantrum so hard in Costco over the weekend that I had to drag her out of the store while Jared paid (maybe it’s karma? apparently I threw tantrums in stores back in my younger years as well).
I love my little girl dearly but there are some days where I wonder where I’ve gone so wrong when her mood changes 180 degrees from where it usually is.
I’ve been doing some reading of parenting books and have really be researching positive discipline. I have also taken a look at the way I discipline now and where I want to be -but more on that another day.
What I’ve really been doing these days is taking the time to find and pray verses for Raeca. This is mostly thanks to Praying Circles Around Your Children by Mark Batterson, I read The Circle Maker last year and it really kicked my prayer time into action.
Rise during the day and cry out.
Pour out your hearts like water to the Lord.
Lift up your hands to Him in prayer,
pleading for your children.
In Praying Circles Around Your Children, Batterson makes a good case as to why we should pray for our children but what I think it is really lacking is a list of great prayers to pray for our children, I know the options are endless but it would have been nice to have a few of them listed.
The last week or so I’ve been gathering verses to pray for/over Raeca. Right now I’ve just started with verses in regards to the areas where we are struggling but over the next few weeks I hope to compile more verses I can pray for her for the rest of her life.
I thought I would share some of my prayer verses in case there is anyone out there that could use them. Here is what I have so far:
for her anger: “Lord, please help Raeca to be slow to anger (James 1:19), for whoever is slow to anger is better than the mighty and she who rules her spirit than those who take a city (Proverbs 16:22).”
for her fear: “Lord, please watch over Raeca, stand beside her as her protective shade (Psalm 121:5), help her to know that You are a refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble, therefore she will not fear (Psalm 46:1-2a). Please deliver her from all her fears (Psalm 34:4) and show her Your favor and give her peace (Numbers 6:26). Help her to be strong and courageous, to not be afraid or dismayed and be with her wherever she goes (Joshua 1:9).”
for joy: “Lord, may Your hope fill Raeca with joy (Romans 15:13), may her heart be glad and her whole being rejoice (Psalm 16:9).”
Do you pray verses for your children? If so, I would love to hear them! I’ll be sharing more of the ones I have for Raeca soon!
